WASHINGTON (AP) — Senators have asked the pro football commissioner to tackle the issue of making more game day TV broadcasts available to fans for free on the NFL Network.

The league has said it provides free broadcasts in the home cities of competing teams. But 13 lawmakers said in a letter this week to Roger Goodell that the NFL is too narrowly interpreting what a home city is.

"The policy leaves behind NFL fans across the country simply because they live outside cities to which the NFL has granted franchises," according to the letter made public Wednesday. For example, the NFL does not consider the western Pennsylvania town of Johnstown part of the Pittsburgh Steelers' home market, the letter said.

The senators want quick action so fans in every market receive free TV access to games played by their closest team or the team it has been historically aligned to. Eight games will air this season on the NFL Network, which is available in less than 40 percent of households. The league is in a dispute with major cable companies over whether they should carry the channel as part of a basic package.

In a statement, the NFL said the goal is to provide the NFL Network to a national audience, but the "goal has been undercut by several of the largest cable operators."

New Orleans Saints veterans Deuce McAllister and Will Smith reportedly are among several players who have violated the NFL steroids policy.

Fox 31 television in Denver, citing an unnamed source, reported yesterday there are between six and 10 positive tests in the NFL for a weight-loss diuretic. The only names the station mentioned were the two Saints, who are in London for tomorrow's game with the San Diego Chargers.

However, Houston TV station KRIV later reported Texans long snapper Bryan Pittman also tested positive and would appeal.

The infection in Tom Brady's surgically repaired left knee has potentially put the New England Patriots quarterback at risk of having to undergo a second ACL reconstruction, The Boston Herald reported.

Doctors concerned by the infection have performed three procedures in an attempt to eradicate it, a source told the newspaper. Brady said on his Web site that he had an arthroscopic procedure done to "clean and to test the wound" last Wednesday, but the paper said two additional procedures have been performed since that time.

According to the source, the fear is the patellar tendon graft used to replace Brady's anterior cruciate ligament is in danger of becoming compromised and may have to be removed. A new reconstruction would push back his rehabilitation, effectively forcing him to start from scratch, and could delay his return to the field.

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — The San Francisco 49ers fired coach Mike Nolan on Monday night, seven games into the fourth consecutive dismal season of his attempt to rebuild the five-time Super Bowl champions.

After four straight losses culminating in Sunday's 29-17 loss to the New York Giants, the 49ers replaced Nolan with assistant head coach Mike Singletary. The former Hall of Fame linebacker in Chicago will take over for the rest of the season, general manager Scot McCloughan said.

Nolan was 18-37 in 3 1/2 seasons with the 49ers, who hired the veteran defensive coordinator to run every aspect of the club in January 2005. Although Nolan brought back a measure of respectability back to the franchise, he has the worst winning percentage (.327) among any 49ers coaches who made it through more than one season with the team.

"The decision was difficult, because Mike has been both a friend and valued coach of our team," said McCloughan, who was hired by Nolan but gained authority over the coach last year. "My first obligation is to do what is in the best interest of our fans and the entire 49ers organization."

NEW YORK (AP) — Suspended Dallas Cowboys cornerback Adam "Pacman" Jones has entered an alcohol treatment center. The oft-troubled player has checked into a facility "in another part of the country," Cowboys owner Jerry Jones told The Associated Press on Monday.

"It's totally done through and by the NFL," Jerry Jones said.

The NFL said Monday it would not comment.

Last week Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones thoroughly explained why he thought Adam "Pacman" Jones did not deserve a suspension following his latest controversial incident. Upon further review, the NFL thinks otherwise.

The NFL announced Tuesday that the oft-troubled Cowboys cornerback Jones has been suspended indefinitely without pay by Commissioner Roger Goodell due to his "alcohol-related altercation" with a team bodyguard at a Dallas hotel last week.
Jones, who was suspended for the entire 2007 season due to multiple violations of the league's Personal Conduct Policy, will miss at least the next four games before Goodell determines the final length of the suspension.

According to a league press release, the decision on Jones' possible reinstatement will be pending his strict compliance to NFL and Cowboys-sponsored treatment plans plus progress reports supplied by clinical behavior experts to Goodell.

Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo has a broken finger on his throwing hand and could be out for up to four weeks.

Romo broke his right pinkie on the first play of overtime in a 30-24 loss at Arizona on Sunday, according to a posting on the team's official Web site. A team spokesman didn't immediately return a call seeking comment Monday.

The injury leaves the Cowboys (4-2) with 40-year-old Brad Johnson as the starter. Johnson, who won a Super Bowl with Tampa Bay, hasn't started a game since 2006 in Minnesota.

DALLAS — Cowboys cornerback Adam Jones placed his status with the NFL in jeopardy by getting involved in an altercation early Wednesday morning at a Dallas hotel.

According to Dallas police, Jones hit his bodyguard, Tommy Jones, at the Joule Hotel. The bodyguard, police said, declined to press charges, and no official report was filed.

Deputy Chief Vince Golbeck, commander of the central patrol division, said officers were called to the Joule about 1:30 a.m. and were told there was a disturbance between Adam Jones and one of his security officers. Golbeck said officers believed Adam Jones was drinking and that he may have stayed at the hotel. Sources close to Jones dispute the report.

FORT WORTH, Texas — Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones could more than make up for his share of the team's new $1.1 billion stadium through personal seat licenses and suite sales, according to a newspaper analysis.

If Jones sells all 55,000 seat licenses at costs ranging from $2,000 to $150,000, he could bring in $735 million without including the price of the ticket, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported in an analysis published Sunday.

Another $400 million is already guaranteed through the 200 suites sold at a minimum price of $100,000 a year, including game tickets, with a 20-year lease.

Jones is paying $750 million of the stadium's cost. The city of Arlington is providing most of the remaining $350 million through voter-approved bonds that will be paid back from portions of sales, hotel occupancy and rental car taxes. The stadium opens next year.

Personal site licenses are becoming a popular way for team owners to finance new stadiums. They are charged to season ticket holders for the rights to the seats and don't include ticket prices. Fans can finance the licenses over up to 30 years and are allowed to sell them on the private market.

TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) — Anquan Boldin has a fractured sinus as a result of what he acknowledges was the worst hit he's received in his football career.

The Arizona Cardinals standout wide receiver doesn't know how long he will be sidelined, but when he returns, he says, there will be no change in his trademark tough, aggressive style.

"For me it was just a part of football," Boldin said after watching his teammates practice on Wednesday. "It's an unfortunate incident that happened but, you know, you take your bumps and bruises."

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell suspended New York Jets safety Eric Smith for one game and fined him $50,000 for the vicious, helmet-to-helmet hit on Boldin in the end zone during the waning seconds of the Jets' 56-35 victory over the Cardinals at the Meadowlands on Sunday.

"You never know somebody's intentions," Boldin said, "but I didn't think it was intentional."

Arizona coach Ken Whisenhunt said it wasn't for him to say whether the punishment was warranted.
